Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN)

Our Mission

The mission of Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) is to promote awareness and understanding about the science, causes, and consequences of climate change. We work with individuals and organizations in Southern Oregon, statewide, nationally, and internationally to advocate for both personal and governmental actions that reduce the emissions and atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases. Within this framework, we are committed to supporting climate solutions that address the social injustices that have undermined vulnerable communities for many decades and that still plague our society today.

SOCAN is committed to fostering accessibility, diversity, equity, and inclusivity in all aspects of our organization – from hiring practices and programming to community outreach. Our pursuit of this work is ongoing and ever-evolving, and it is guided by our values of cultivating collaboration, developing understanding, and striving for climate justice.

Our Goal

We seek a reduction in the global atmospheric greenhouse gas concentration to 350 parts per million Carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e).

Examples of Our Activities include:

  • Regional and Local Project with Climate Action Teams in local towns, many of who are seeking to promote electrification. The Talent City Council recently approved Talent's Clean Energy & Clean Air Resolution. We are supporting the Rogue Climate Action Team in their efforts to stimulate action in Ashland.
  • Federal and State Project engages with the state legislature to support climate legislation, especially bills relating to energy efficiency, including electrification.
  • Monthly Meeting on topics related to climate change, including electrification.
