The Douglas County Global Warming Coalition is an all-volunteer grassroots organization dedicated to addressing the climate crisis. We represent 500 residents in our rural community. For over twenty years, we have worked to effectively reduce climate pollution through legislation, education, and forums featuring high-level experts in the field of climate science.
We have long recognized the critical role electrification must play in addressing the climate crisis. To this end, well before heat pump legislation was being considered, we partnered with Sustainable Northwest to promote the use and purchase of heat pumps for residences.
We expanded our commitment to electrification by forming and facilitating the Umpqua Transportation Team (UTET). Established years ago, this organization has brought together a broad variety of interests whose primary objective is to promote the electrification system. Our partners include the electric utilities serving our area, Pacific Power and Douglas Electric Cooperative, businesses, the Housing Authority of Douglas County, Umpqua Public Transit District, electric vehicle owners, and community advocates, and experts in our community. We strongly emphasize the need to service low and moderate-income households. As a result, the local housing authority has developed an e-bike sharing program for residents. On Earth Day 2023, we partnered with Pacific Power and Forth to sponsor an electric vehicle “Ride and Drive” event. Additional efforts and successes include promoting electrification incentives and installing EV charging stations. The local transportation district and Roseburg Disposal are moving forward to electrify their vehicles.
Future Douglas County Global Warming Coalition plans include hosting an electric vehicle show and Electrification Fair.
